One of the easiest ways to stick to a budget is to lower your expenses and save money. But many people still want to enjoy life and small pleasures, without sacrificing their hard-earned cash. When this happens, discount sites like Groupon are a great deal.
You can always find something that lets you enjoy life and have fun, without overspending. Things like vacations, experiences, and even goods, are easier and cheaper to buy through sites like these.
If you love saving money, but still want to enjoy life, it’s possible with a little research.
What is Groupon?
First, let’s talk about Groupon. What is it?
Groupon is an online coupon site that saves you money by offering deals for an array of services and retailers. These deals are typically local, allowing you to try new things, or to receive a discount on experiences and items you want to revisit.
For example, you can find massages, trips to the local museum, and discounted nail services on Groupon for up to 75 percent of their normal price. You can use these deals to save around town, or at a vacation destination.
And not only that, but you could also find goods like jewelry and electronics for more than half off. Besides the deals you can score, Groupon is easy and free to use. All you need is an email address.
You don’t have to search the site trying to find a deal. Instead, you can sign up for the alerts, and Groupon will email you when they find what you’re looking for around your city.
While the platform is a go-to for budget-savvy individuals, there are alternatives to Groupon that offer similar savings.
Sites Like Groupon
Groupon isn’t the only online deal site that offers savings. They are simply the most well-known option. If you want to increase your opportunity to save, consider one of the below discount sites like Groupon to save money on your next purchase.
LivingSocial is one of the best Groupon alternatives, mainly because they’re owned by the same company. However, LivingSocial is a bit different and is a valuable addition to Groupon.
The biggest perk to using LivingSocial is their travel deals. From a hotel in the city to out of the country, you’re bound to find a good deal to virtually anywhere you want to go.
For example, while browsing and looking for vacation spots, I found a 12-day guided tour through China for just $599 per person. Sure, $599 may seem like quite a bit of money, but for a trip to China and 12-days in China, round trip tickets, and hotels, you can’t beat a $600 price tag.
As with anything, make sure to read the fine print and stick to the rules governing any site, including LivingSocial. Like with the China trip, I found that traveling solo would cost an extra $400, and I also had to pay a $120 fee for the guide.
Of course, I could still get a good deal, but those fees can add up if you aren’t paying attention.
With a name like Coupons.com, it’s no surprise that you can save money using the site. This site offers multiple coupons, both printable and digital, on items you already buy in stores.
While you won’t find any deals for experiences or vacations, you can lower your grocery and shopping bills with Coupons.com. Plus, you can print them off, or keep them stored on your phone, whatever works best for you.
For me, I love keeping them on my phone because I take it everywhere with me. That way I know I almost always have a coupon that can save me some money.
Coupons.com also offers cash back and coupon codes for online retailers, including, but not limited to:
- The Honest Company
- Best Buy
Coupons.com is one of the best coupon sites to use if saving money on everyday purchases is important to you. Saving money is simple with the service, especially with a participating retailer as you receive the discount at purchase.
If that is not an option, you can scan the receipt after purchase to send the savings directly to your PayPal.
Woot is one of the top money-saving sites like Groupon if you want items for your home. Think of Woot as an online HSN, but with better deals and faster shipping.
Like Groupon, Woot offers daily deals and once they’re gone, they’re gone. However, you can score some awesome items for half off their original retail price, or more.
The best thing about Woot is that they’re backed by Amazon, so Amazon Prime members receive free two-day shipping. They also have liquidation stock that they update regularly.
There, you’ll find items that retailers over-ordered but never sold, so you get the savings. I found a Harry Potter coding kit for less than $50 when the original retail was $100. Not a bad future Christmas present huh?
RetailMeNot has been around since 2006 and is one of the best sites for coupons and deals. On RetailMeNot you can find a coupon for almost anything, from food to electronics.
Also, lately RetailMeNot has been including more deals and perks for those who use their cash back offers. For example, this weekend you can get twice as much cash back as you normally would, shopping at stores like Staples and OfficeMax, and even e-commerce stores like Udemy.
RetailMeNot is one of the first sites that you should check out when trying to save money on a purchase.
SlickDeals is another one of the best Groupon alternatives that offers daily deals. The difference between Groupon and SlickDeals is that businesses actively promote a specific product or service on Groupon at a discounted rate.
SlickDeals, however, pulls deals and savings from most major retailers and shows them on one handy site.
If you like online shopping, but don’t like scouring the internet for the best deal, you should check out SlickDeals before shopping elsewhere. The website has virtually everything you could want, minus food, for a fraction of the price.
SlickDeals also has their forums and deal alerts, so you’ll never miss out on a “can’t miss this” deal every again.
DealCatcher has been around for years, even before Groupon. Started in 1999, DealCatcher is another site that offers daily deals and coupons for a multitude of businesses.
You can find over 10,000 coupons and deals on the site, according to DealCatcher. Like Groupon and other daily deal sites, you can find deals on their site or through their app.
One of my favorite things about the site is that you can categorize your searching capabilities. For example, if you just need a coupon, you can click on the coupons tab.
But, if you’re looking for a specific deal, you search for it, find it in the in-store tab, or look at the deals of the day. You can even customize how much you’re willing to spend.
DealNews is the ultimate website for all things savings. The items on the site are hand-picked as the “top deals” item by a team of experts.
In other words, you’ll know you’ll receive a good deal on whatever you buy from the DealNews site.
Because of this site, my husband and I got our latest TV on Black Friday for over 60 percent off. And the best perk? I didn’t even have to leave the house.
DealNews has multiple categories and stores to choose from. Think of it as an Amazon for deals and savings. You can find multiples of the same item and can purchase items with just the click of a button.
While you can’t shop directly on the site, it does direct you to the appropriate website and item that you’re buying, including the discounted price.
As the name may suggest, TravelZoo is one of the best sites like Groupon for travel offers and savings. The TravelZoo site helps you save money on items related to travel, such as:
- Rental cars
Don’t worry if you’re trying to find things to do during your vacation. TravelZoo has those options and savings too. Just click the “things to do” tab and find what’s in store in your travel area.
You can also sign up for their email list, where they will mail the best deals and travel options every day. If you’re planning a vacation and want to save money, TravelZoo is worth considering.
Last but not least we have DealsPlus, another one of the other Groupon alternatives that can save you cash. If you’re into fashion or home decor/organization, you’re bound to find something from this site that you can’t live without.
DealsPlus doesn’t offer services or vacations at a discounted rate. But it does offer a lot of goods and items that you may be looking for at a discount.
Of course, remember to be careful not to overspend due to the deals, but don’t be afraid to take advantage. They carry a huge assortment of items, but my favorites are:
- Plus size clothing selection
- Kitchen items and tools
- Home organization items
- Board games
Sites like DealsPlus are great for buying presents ahead of time, getting your clothes shopping out of the way (especially during back to school) and more, all without leaving the comfort of your own home.
Groupon Alternatives: Bottom Line
With anything, you need to ensure you read the fine print and not spend foolishly. If you’re a compulsive spender, buying from sites like Groupon may not be good for your budget.
However, if you’re looking to save money on the trips you already take, items you already buy, and gifts you already planned on getting, these alternatives to Groupon provide an excellent way to save money.
If you’re going to buy the item anyway, it makes sense to save money on your purchase.
What other discount sites like Groupon do you use to save money? How else do you save money on your purchases? What methods do you use to comparison shop?
