7 Jobs like DoorDash to Make Money Delivering Meals

Like it or not, we’re all busy. Providing a quality meal for your family or getting lunch on a hectic day isn’t always simple. Food delivery offers a terrific solution to this problem, and it provides a real way to make money on the side if you need to supplement your income. Food delivery jobs like DoorDash let you help an individual or family in need, plus put cash in your pocket, without requiring any special skills.

You may believe that you don’t have time to work on the side. For many, that’s a justifiable concern, but the draw of driver apps like DoorDash is you can set your schedule. That allows you to work several hours a few nights a week, on the weekend, or whenever it works for you.

If you want to make money on the side while helping others, our guide shares the best on-demand driver apps to use.

What Is DoorDash?

DoorDash is one of the most popular on-demand food delivery services in the space. The DoorDash app is available in 850+ cities and allows customers to order food and have it delivered to their door.

Once a customer enters their order, it becomes available for a DoorDash driver to pick up and deliver.

To become a DoorDash driver, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a valid driver’s license and car insurance
  • Be able to pass a background check
  • Have a clean driving record
  • Own a newer smartphone with the latest update
  • Be able to attend orientation (based on your city and state, so make sure to check)

Depending on where you live, you may need to meet additional qualifications. Once you sign up and complete all of your requirements, you can start driving for DoorDash.

DoorDash pays weekly, and you receive at least $1 per order plus 100 percent of all the tips you earn.

DoorDash driver pay does vary, as you work on your schedule, receive tips, and get paid based on how fast you deliver.

However, you can earn up to $20 an hour driving for DoorDash, making it one of the best paying delivery app gigs you can use.

Delivery Jobs Like DoorDash

While DoorDash is an excellent way to earn side income, other apps work similarly. Many resemble DoorDash, while others have unique offerings. You can work for one service or select several to supplement your income further.

Most services pay you weekly, and often via direct deposit. Additionally, many services allow you to deliver via car, bike, scooter, or motorcycle.

Below are the seven best food delivery jobs like DoorDash to make money on the side.

1. Postmates

Postmates is one of the larger competitors to DoorDash. While the service isn’t available in as many cities, they are in all 50 States and are rapidly growing.

The Postmates app operates much like DoorDash; you can read our Postmates vs. DoorDash review to learn how they differ.

One key area they differ is what you can deliver with Postmates.

Not only can you deliver meals, but you can also deliver the following:

  • Alcohol
  • Clothing
  • Groceries

Think of the service more of a courier service that also allows you to deliver meals.

To qualify as a driver for Postmates, you need to meet the following qualifications:

  • Have a valid driver’s license and car insurance
  • Be able to pass a background check
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a newer smartphone
  • Be able to pass the interview (if applicable for your state)

Once you’ve become a driver, you can pick up orders whenever you’re available. All you have to do is open the app and accept the orders that you want to complete.

You can also receive tips and bonuses during busy times.

Postmates is a first-come, first-served delivery app. So, if you’re working during super busy times, you may lose out on orders if you aren’t quick enough.

Postmates claims you can make up to $25 per hour, but most cities report earnings around $18 per hour.

You can read our Postmates driver review to learn more about the on-demand delivery app.

2. Instacart Shopper

Instacart Shopper isn’t precisely like DoorDash, because drivers deliver groceries instead of meals. However, if you love grocery shopping, this is a great side hustle to consider.

The service is available in all 50 States, and they work with many grocery store chains.

With Instacart Shopper, you can work with them in two different ways. The first is as a full-service shopper; this means that you receive the grocery order, shop for groceries, and then deliver them.

Or, you could be an in-store shopper, where you would pick and bag the groceries and get them ready for pickup. With this option, you have the opportunity to be an employee versus an independent contractor.

Employee status entitles you to benefits like sick pay and retirement savings but will limit the amount of money you can make.

To qualify as a full-service shopper, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be 18 years old or older
  • Have access to a reliable vehicle and valid insurance (vehicle age does not matter)
  • Have a recent smartphone (iPhone 5 or Android 4.4 or newer)
  • Be able to lift at least 30 pounds

To qualify as an in-store shopper, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be 18 years old or older
  • Be eligible to work in the United States
  • Have a smartphone with at least iPhone 5.0 or Android 4.4 capability
  • Be able to lift between 30-40 lbs. with or without accommodation

With either option that you choose, you’re paid weekly and can pick your hours. You must set your schedule at least a week in advance.

You’re also required to have at least a two-hour shift (if full service) or four-hour shift (if in-store) if picking hours.

Instacart Shopper claims you can earn at least $20 per hour, inclusive of tips, but that varies based on your location.

3. Uber Eats

Uber Eats is one of the most well-known on-demand driver apps like DoorDash. Like their parent company Uber, the service covers most towns and cities and delivers food from hundreds of restaurants, including McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and sit down restaurants.

To drive for Uber Eats, you need to meet the following qualifications:

  • Be at least 19 years of age (or 18 if delivering by bike)
  • Be able to lift 30 pounds or more
  • Have a driver’s license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration
  • Have at least one year of driving experience (no experience needed if delivering by bike)
  • Be able to pass a background check
  • Have a vehicle that’s less than 15 years old.

If you’re already an Uber driver, you can apply and be approved quicker than only joining through Uber Eats. So, if you want to do both, it is possible and helps you increase earnings.

Like other alternatives to DoorDash, you receive payment weekly and can earn tips to supplement earnings.

4. Lyft

While Lyft doesn’t offer food delivery yet, they are a huge company that offers weekly pay for driving services.

The on-demand driving service isn’t as prevalent as Uber, but they’re still available in 600+ cities, making them a solid option to consider.

While a direct competitor to Uber, you can drive for both services at once to make extra money. Lyft currently has a promotion guaranteeing at least $1,000 in earnings during your 30 days if you complete at least 125 drives.

To qualify to be a Lyft driver, you need to meet the following qualifications:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Have an active U.S. driver’s license for at least one year
  • Have a valid license plate and up to date car registration
  • Be able to pass a background check
  • Have a current insurance policy

Your car also needs to meet certain requirements. These include four working doors, functioning heat and air, and at least five working seat belts since you’ll be transporting passengers.

You’ll need to have the car inspected before you start driving for Lyft, and, depending on your city, it will need to be less than 12 years old. Your city may have additional requirements, so these are a minimum.

5. Grubhub

Grubhub is another one of the more popular jobs like DoorDash. The service is available in 2,500+ cities, inclusive of international locations, making it one of the leaders in the space.

Thanks to their size, Grubhub works with 140,000+ restaurants nationwide, meaning it’s likely to find opportunities to work for them in your area.

Make Extra Money by Taking Short Surveys
Taking short surveys in your free time can be an awesome way to earn extra money fast! The instant you finish a survey, Survey Junkie pays you in cash via PayPal. 6 Million users and an 8.9/10 Trust Pilot rating prove you can trust them.

Like any other alternatives to DoorDash, you need to meet specific requirements. Those include:

  • Be at least 19 years old
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Have auto insurance if delivering by car or motorcycle
  • Be able to pass a background check
  • Have a smartphone with the most recent update
  • Have a bank account

Grubhub claims drivers can earn up to $30 per hour, though reports indicate it’s closer to $18 – $20 per hour. Like other services, this often requires working at least one weekend evening to reach those earnings.

Pay is a bit unique with Grubhub. You earn $3.25 per order, plus $0.50 per mile that you drive. You also receive tips, and you keep 100 percent of those to increase your earnings.

Due to their wide availability, Grubhub isn’t always actively hiring in all cities, so keep that in mind as you consider available opportunties.

6. Caviar

With Caviar, you could pick up orders in a car, truck, bike, scooter, or even by motorcycle. Founded in 2012, Caviar is one of the newer delivery jobs similar to DoorDash and only available in about a dozen cities, but they are expanding rapidly.

If you live in a larger city, Caviar is a service worth considering for side work.

To qualify as a Caviar courier, you need to meet the following qualifications:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Have a working vehicle (car, truck, bike, scooter, or motorcycle)
  • Have an up to date smartphone
  • Be able to pass a background check
  • Have two years of driving experience.
  • Provide thermal bags for groceries, or have the funds to purchase them through Caviar

Once approved, you receive access to jobs in the area, choose your hours, and be able to cash out after each delivery. The service claims earnings of $25 per hour, inclusive of tips.

Caviar pays out via Cash App. If you don’t want to get paid instantly, you can get paid weekly straight to your bank account.

7. Roadie

Do you love long drives and the open road? While it doesn’t always involve food, Roadie allows you to travel long distances to make money. “Roadies” can deliver virtually anything, such as:

  • Groceries
  • Large items
  • Prescriptions

Think of Roadie as delivering packages, like Amazon, and anything else that may come to mind. Roadies earn up to $15 if the delivery is local, and up to $650 if the delivery is further away.

To become a Roadie driver, you need to meet the following qualifications:

  • To be at least 18 years old
  • A valid Social Security Number
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Maintain at least four stars as a Roadie driver (once you’re accepted)

Your vehicle doesn’t have any requirements, as long as it can get you to and from each gig. So, this is great if you have an older (yet still reliable) vehicle.

Roadie likes to make it easier on delivery drivers, so they try to bundle gigs. That way, you don’t have to drive out of the way to make a delivery.

Once they know your route, they will match you with gigs along the way.

This option is great if you’re going on a road trip and need extra cash along the way, or if you want to fit in a side hustle before and after work.
